session #1 - 4 weeks

                        Exploring Line

In August 2012 we began an adventure with line by exploring the lines that our bodies make when we walk, the invisible lines that we make when we move, and the traces we leave behind wherever we pass.

The second session freed the line from its two dimensional plane and followed its various interventions in three dimensional space. We discovered the powerful effects that lines in space have on our bodies and movement just by adding lines of string to the room. Then we wondered whether or not a line could be made out of an arrangement of diverse objects, so we did an experiment to find out.

After encountering the three dimensional line, we moved on to meet a line still more strange and powerful, the contour or boundary… We discovered that all objects have boundaries that help us to separate them from their backgrounds and we played a game to explore the effects of boundary lines on behavior.

In our last week we tried to imagine what lines might be like if we could hear them. Inspired by John Cage and Iannis Xenaxis, we discovered music in everyday life and tried to translate the sounds that we heard into drawings and dance.
